Agent Orange - A Final Analysis

That dioxin is a deadly toxin cannot be disputed. The weight of scientific evidence is just too great. The Department of Defense released in early July the latest report of the Air Force Ranch Hand Study on the health effects of exposure to herbicides in Vietnam. And guess what? The final examination of the 20-year epidemiological study provides the strongest evidence yet that Agent Orange is associated with adult-onset diabetes. This report, along with many other studies on herbicide and dioxin exposure, will be reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences. Based upon this review, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs can ask Congress for legislation on disability compensation and health care. Results from the 2002 physical examination suggest that as dioxin levels increase, not only are the presence and severity of adult-onset diabetes increased, but the time to onset of the disease is decreased. A 166 percent increase in diabetes requiring insulin control was seen in those with the highest levels of dioxin in their system. Cardiovascular disease findings were not consistent, according to a news release from DoD. Separate studies have found an increased risk of cardiovascular death in Ranch Hand enlisted ground crews, the subgroup with the highest average serum dioxin. The news release went on: ‘Overall, Ranch Hand pilots and ground crews examined in 2002 had not experienced a statistically significant increase in heart disease relative to the comparison group. Associations between measures of cardiac function and history of heart diseases and herbicide or dioxin exposure were not consistent or clinically interpretable as adverse.’ Similarly, ‘the Ranch Hand enlisted ground crews, the subgroup with the highest dioxin levels and presumably the greatest herbicide exposure, exhibited a 14 percent decreased risk of cancer.’ We do not concur. We believe that dioxin is associated with a lot more conditions that ravage and can eventually end the lives of our brother and sister veterans. We believe that the Ranch Hand Study should not end the government’s investigation into the adverse health effects caused by or associated with exposure to Agent Orange. We are particularly concerned for our offspring and their children: There must be further investigation into the intergenerational effects of dioxin. I’m proud that VVA took the lead and prodded the government to recognize the insidious and lingering effects of Agent Orange and other defoliants on the health and well-being of ground troops in Vietnam and, of course, the Air Force ‘hands’ that did the spraying. I hope that VVA will continue to lead, advocating and putting pressure on the powers that be in our government and insisting that additional research be properly funded and undertaken. We owe this to our children; the government owes this to us.

One of the longest running weight loss programs, with arguably the largest following in the world, is Weight Watchers. Points System Well, for one thing, at the heart of this program is a points system that is given to different servings of foods that you eat on the program. For example, 1 cup of non-fat plain yogurt is 2 points while a salad with low-fat dressing is just 1 point. Additionally, on the day you exercise you are allowed to have more food points. Conversely, on the days you do not exercise you will consume foods with fewer points. Salads and vegetables are free of points and can be eaten as much as the person likes. Points are determined for each person based on the amount of weight that person wishes to lose. On the average, participants are given between 18-22 points per day. But again, this is determined on an individual basis. No Food Restrictions Another difference between this diet program and other weight loss programs is that there is no restriction as to what foods the participants can eat. Unlike such weight loss programs as the South Beach diet where dieters eliminate carbohydrates that may not be healthy like bread, potatoes, sugar, sweets, cereals and grains, fruits, baked goods and other types of sugar containing foods, the program was set up to allow participants to eat any foods that they like as long as they stay within the number of points you are allowed for that day. Support System Another difference that sets Weight Watchers apart from other weight loss programs is an optional support system that is built into the program. When you officially enroll in this program, you will be able to meet with a group of like-minded people who are trying to lose weight themselves. During the support groups, group leaders may deliver talks on a variety of topics and participants can share their experiences, ask questions or get advice. Core Plan In recent times, they have added another aspect to their program which they call the Core Plan. This plan involves allowing you to eat from a certain category of foods until satisfied but not until full. Some of these foods include: lean meats, whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables and fat-free dairy products, just to name a few. With millions of followers around the world, Weight Watchers has helped people from all walks of life to do the one thing they wanted most, lose weight. Their points system, combined with an eat-what-you-want attitude rather than a diet mentality, makes this unique diet regime a practical, flexible approach that a lot of people are finding success with.

The risks of abortion pills

Although abortion pills are known as a safe method of ending pregnancy, complications can and do arise. An abortion pill which is widely known as RU486 is an FDA approved drug to be used as an abortifacient.  

Two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol are given to induce abortion if the pregnancy is within the permissible time frame of 9 weeks. The pill works to contract the uterine and expel the pregnancy tissue. It is not recommended if the patient has medical conditions like heart disease, asthma, anemia, diabetes, hypertension, bleeding problems or if fitted with an IUD.  

Renal or respiratory disease, adrenal failure, a history of taking anti-depressants, aspirin or steroids also rules out the abortion pill. Abortion pills are also not advisable for people who have had an earlier surgery of the cervix or the uterus or have a fibroid uterus. HIV patients and heavy smokers cannot undergo this type of medical abortion.  

Even if all the health and medical criteria fall into place, the problems associated with even the safe abortion pills must be considered and patients need to be aware of the side-effects. Also, sometimes, the side-effects can be adverse enough to pose life threatening risks. These can vary from person to person but may include heavy bleeding, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. For some, taking an abortion pill can turn out to be more complicated than a surgical abortion.  

Bleeding can be a problem associated with the abortion pill and some women may experience heavy bleeding far longer than a normal period of time. Both too little and too much bleeding can be a sign of problems. Too little may mean the procedure was incomplete and may require repeat medication or suction aspiration. Bleeding which saturates more than 2 maxi pads for more than two consecutive hours is considered too much and the patient needs to be evaluated by her physician.  

Severe hemorrhaging is rare and only occurs 1 or 2 times in every 1000 cases, and is usually seen only in patients who are over 7 weeks. If the heavy bleeding does not lessen or continues much longer after the abortion it may be a sign of incomplete pregnancy. This means that some pregnancy tissue still remains in the womb which then has to be treated with an aspiration abortion procedure.  

Some women may experience moderate to heavy cramping may require pain medication.   

In the case of incomplete abortion and where surgical intervention is required to complete the process, infection may become an additional risk.

Injury to the cervix or the fallopian tube during the process of medical abortion may lead to complications in future conceptions.  

The risk of rupture increases in an ectopic pregnancy as the abortion pill may give the impression of having terminated the pregnancy without actually being successful in it.  

Abortion pills have their own share of risks, ranging from small to severe and should not be considered the only viable method of terminating a pregnancy.  

As with all abortion procedures, risks are greatly minimized when performed by a competent physician experienced with medical abortion.

Did you know that a lack of omega 3 can exacerbate or even cause diabetes? The link between diabetes and omega 3 is this; a lack of omega 3 causes inflammation which in turn can lead to insulin resistance. Obviously this is particularly bad for someone already diagnosed with diabetes but insulin resistance can end up causing diabetes.

Not only can inflammation cause insulin resistance and consequent type 2 diabetes but it can also cause heart disease and vascular damage.

The fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 are found in animal, fish and vegetable oils. Eaten in the right proportions, they can reduce the body’s inflammation.

In the days before fast foods and battery farming became so prevalent, the balance was easy to maintain because animals grazed rather than being fed chemical pellets and the omega 3 they obtained in that way was passed to humans through milk, meat and eggs.

Conversely, omega 6 is more prevalent in the modern diet, being found in the vegetable oils used to produce junk food. As a result the balance between omega 6 and omega 3 has been distorted causing inflammation, cardio vascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

This isn’t a case of good guy versus bad guy but a case of balance as with all dietary nutrients. Balancing your diet to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, grains and protein and fewer processed foods, salt, sugar, chocolate, alcohol and fats is great for the cardio vascular system and greatly reduces your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

The symptoms of omega 3 deficiency are:

- dry skin
- dry eyes
- irritability
- painful joints
- short term memory difficulties
- brittle nails and hair

If you a experiencing any or all of the above, try increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids and avoiding additional omega 6. However, if you think you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, see your doctor immediately.

If you think that a modification to your diet is sufficient, avoid vegetable oils and foods which may contain them or have been fried in them; olive oil is a very healthy alternative but don’t use the extra virgin variety for frying as it develops a bitter taste.

Increase your intake of walnuts, flax seeds, free range eggs and any oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines in order to reduce your risk of diabetes and omega 3 deficiency.

Diabetic sleep disorders are getting a lot of attention. Most of that is because the link between sleep loss and type 2 diabetes is showing up in shift workers, sleep apnea sufferers and healthy young people with sleep deprivation.

What is most exciting is that researchers have found a genetic link to the hormone melatonin. It may hold a key to a genetic cause for the tendency to have type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic Sleep Disorders and Slow Wave Sleep

Doctors who study and treat sleep apnea have known for many years that there is a connection between slow wave sleep and health. People who have this sleep disorder get very little to no deep sleep. Doctors named this stage slow wave sleep from the EEG readings they charted.

Treating sleep apnea gives the sufferer a chance to enter REM (dream sleep), and they found that the slow wave sleep that surrounds REM is just as important. During this stage your body heals itself and resets its regulating hormones for appetite, body temperature and even your metabolic rate (how well you burn calories).

During this sleep you actually burn more fat than you do while you exercise. If all those things are true, it is essential to your health to get a good amount of slow wave sleep.

Here’s another fact. Healthy young men and women were tested while they were getting less than 5 hours of sleep a night. In just a few days they showed greater insulin resistance. It was another proof that slow wave sleep is linked to lower glucose levels.

Diabetic Sleep Disorders and Obesity

Studies also showed that people who slept less tended to have a higher BMI. Sleep deprivation greatly increases your risk of obesity. And the connection lies in your hormones.

Short sleep time lowers your leptin, the hormone that signals decrease in appetite and speeding up of metabolism when it senses you have fat stores. Sleep deprived people also have higher levels of ghirelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger. The net result is increased appetite and more storing of calories in fat.

So sleep disorders increase your risk of obesity. People who get over 7 hours of good sleep tend to be less likely to be obese.

Some of the causes are due to behavior. When you are exhausted you will eat to stay awake. And you may think that eating will give you more energy when what you have is a “sleep debt” that you need to pay.

Many of us who are type 2 diabetic think we are getting good sleep because we sleep most of the night. So why do we wake up groggy and feel unrested? Sleep doctors will tell us the problem is almost always obstructive sleep apnea.

If you are getting little or no slow wave sleep, you will fight hunger all day and have a very hard time losing weight. Exercise helps, but if sleep apnea is treated you will get more benefit from the exercise.

Diabetic Sleep Disorders and Diabetes Complications

For type 2 diabetics there are other reasons for sleep loss. Diabetic nocturia from polyuria or from medications gets you out of bed in the middle of the night. Neuropathic pain and super-sensitive feet will make it hard to stay comfortable all night. And there is the annoying restless legs syndrome that plagues diabetics more than nondiabetics.

These problems are helped by tight blood sugar control and plenty of exercise. But many type 2 diabetics must also rely on medications for the neuropathy and restless legs. The trouble is that some of those medications have a side effect of inhibiting slow wave sleep.

You need to tell your doctor if while taking the pills he prescribed you are sleepy during the day and have problems with hunger and staying alert. Everyone reacts to medications differently, and you may need a lower dosage or even a different medication. Don’t give up until you are getting the benefits and still getting all the slow wave sleep you need.

Diabetic Sleep Disorders and Melatonin

There is a genetic link between type 2 diabetes and melatonin, and it has to do with damage at the DNA level. If the melatonin receptor’s DNA is damaged, sleep will be affected along with lower metabolism and lower insulin production. All of that means higher blood sugars and worsened sleep. This combination can lead to type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Your beta cells, the producers of insulin, have the protein that makes melatonin in them. So if melatonin is affected, so is insulin. This is new stuff, so how it will change our treatment as diabetics isn’t clear.

Your biological clock is regulated by melatonin and serotonin. When light levels are low your brain tells your pineal gland to release melatonin, and you get sleepy. It peaks just before bedtime and then fades. Serotonin is stimulated by light and wakes you up. That’s why if you have trouble falling asleep at night or waking up in the morning, a 15-minute dose of sunlight will do wonders.

When tested for it, type 2 diabetics have been found to have less melatonin than nondiabetics, but we cannot just take it in a supplement. Melatonin pills are given to people who have confused their days and nights from shift work or jet lag, and blind people take them to help their biological clock work better.
